What Is Nervous System Healing?
Definition
Nervous system healing refers to the process of restoring the autonomic nervous system's flexibility and capacity for appropriate response after it has been dysregulated by chronic stress or trauma. A regulated nervous system can move between the sympathetic (mobilization/activation) and parasympathetic (rest/digest and social engagement) states in response to actual conditions: activating when genuine threat is present and returning to rest when the threat has passed. A dysregulated nervous system has lost this flexibility, remaining stuck in chronic activation (hyperarousal: anxiety, hypervigilance, insomnia) or chronic shutdown (hypoarousal: dissociation, numbness, fatigue, depression), or oscillating between them unpredictably. Healing the nervous system means restoring the range and the appropriate responsiveness.
Origins & Context
The science of the autonomic nervous system and trauma is primarily associated with Stephen Porges's Polyvagal Theory, which describes three states of nervous system activation: ventral vagal (social engagement, safety, calm connection), sympathetic (fight or flight, mobilization), and dorsal vagal (shutdown, freeze, collapse). Trauma dysregulates these states by teaching the nervous system that threat is chronic, safety is unreliable, and the body must remain in a state of readiness that normal life does not actually require.
Somatic approaches to trauma — including Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing, Pat Ogden's Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and EMDR — are founded on the understanding that healing the nervous system requires working with the body, not only the mind. Cognitive understanding of what happened does not change the nervous system's assessment of current safety. The body requires direct experience of safety, over time, to begin to revise the threat assessment it is running.

How It Shows Up
Healing shows up slowly: in the first night of genuinely good sleep in years. In the moment when you catch yourself not bracing. In the capacity to sit in a quiet room without needing it to mean something ominous. In the discovery that you can feel angry without it flooding into an emergency, or sad without it becoming a collapse.
It shows up in the gradual expansion of the window of tolerance: the range of arousal within which you can feel, think, connect, and act effectively. As the nervous system heals, this window expands. Experiences that would previously have sent you into dysregulation begin to be tolerable. Tolerable becomes familiar. Familiar becomes safe.
It also shows up in the relationship to the body: the person whose nervous system is healing begins to be able to inhabit their body again — to feel sensations without interpreting them all as threat, to feel pleasure without bracing for its withdrawal, to rest without vigilance.
Nikita's Note
Nervous system healing is the most foundational and the least glamorous of the healing work. It does not produce dramatic insights. It does not look like transformation from the outside. It looks like going to bed at a reasonable hour, learning to breathe all the way to the bottom of the lungs, noticing that the startle response is slightly less intense than it was six months ago.
But it is the foundation. You cannot do the attachment work or the inner child work or the grief work in a body that is in chronic threat response. The nervous system has to be at least somewhat able to rest for the deeper work to be metabolized. The insight arrives, but it is not held if the system immediately re-activates.
The most important thing I know about nervous system healing is that it requires genuine safety over time. Not a single intervention, not a single retreat, not a single profound experience. Consistent, repeated, real experiences of safety — in the body, in relationship, in environment — that accumulate until the system begins to revise its prediction about what the world is. This takes longer than we want it to. It also produces something more lasting than the faster routes.
