Diwali Puja Essentials Guide 2026 — Everything You Need for Lakshmi Puja
The complete checklist so nothing gets forgotten on the most important night

The Diwali Lakshmi Puja is the spiritual heart of the festival — and it's the part most people rush or do incompletely because they forgot to gather essentials in advance. This guide covers everything you need, purchased and prepared ahead of time.
Understanding the Puja Structure
Lakshmi Puja on Diwali typically occurs on Amavasya (the night of the new moon), specifically during the Pradosh Kaal (just after sunset) and Nishita Kaal (midnight) windows.
The puja typically involves:
- Sankalpam — Taking the resolve for the puja
- Kalash Sthapna — Setting up the holy water vessel
- Ganesh Puja — Honouring Ganesha first (always)
- Lakshmi Puja — The main worship
- Kuber Puja — Honouring the god of wealth
- Aarti — The concluding lamp ceremony
- Prasad distribution

Pre-packaged Puja Kits
Ready-made Diwali Puja Samagri kits are available on Amazon and in local religious stores. These typically include all or most of the above items at ₹500–₹1,500, which is extremely convenient if you're short on time.
What they miss: Fresh flowers (always buy separately on the day), fresh fruits, and perishable prasad items. Also: specific items required by your regional tradition that vary from the standard kit.
Preparing the Puja Space
- The puja room or puja corner should be thoroughly cleaned the day before
- The chowki should face East or North
- Draw rangoli outside the entrance with auspicious symbols
- Set out all items in order of use the evening of Diwali
After the Puja
The sanctified items (prasad, flowers, puja water) are treated with respect. Flowers and leaves can be placed in running water or under a tree. Prasad is distributed to family and neighbours. The diyas are left to burn out naturally.
The Diwali Puja is not just a ritual — it's the annual renewal of your relationship with the idea of abundance, light, and new beginnings. Doing it with care and completeness gives the entire festival its meaning.
