What neuroscience, quantum biology, and psychology can actually tell us about consciousness, subtle energy, and the mechanisms underneath practices that work but defy easy explanation.

The hard problem is different: why is there something it feels like to be a conscious organism? Why does neural processing produce subjective experience rather than occurring "in the dark"?

This problem is not solved. The neuroscience of consciousness — the mapping of neural correlates to specific experiential states — has advanced significantly, particularly through the work of Antonio Damasio at the University of Southern California. Damasio's somatic marker hypothesis (Descartes' Error, 1994; The Feeling of What Happens, 1999) proposes that consciousness is grounded in the body's physiological states — that the brain's representation of bodily signals is the substrate on which awareness is built. Feeling, in Damasio's model, is not peripheral to consciousness; it is constitutive of it.

The practical implication: the body is not a vehicle for a consciousness that happens in the head. Consciousness is embodied. The experiences described in energy work — felt as sensation in the body, as heat, pressure, movement, tingling — are occurring in the same substrate where consciousness is generated. Whether what is described as "energy" corresponds to a specific physical phenomenon or to the body's own somatic awareness is a question the research has not definitively answered.

What Interpersonal Neurobiology Offers

Daniel Siegel's interpersonal neurobiology — developed across The Mindful Brain (2007), Mindsight (2010), and extensive clinical research — documents that the brain is a social organ. Its development, regulation, and moment-to-moment functioning occur in relationship to other nervous systems. This is not metaphor: the infant's nervous system is literally regulated by the caregiver's through co-regulation mechanisms that Siegel and Allan Schore (UCLA) have mapped at the neurological level.

The mirror neuron system, discovered by Giacomo Rizzolatti and colleagues at the University of Parma (published in Science, 1996), provides a specific mechanism: neurons that fire both when an action is performed and when the same action is observed in another. In the domain of emotional experience, the mirror system produces resonance: observing another person's emotional expression activates a similar neural pattern in the observer. The nervous system is, in a technically precise sense, resonant with the nervous systems of those it is in contact with.

What practitioners describe as "feeling someone's energy" — the experience of sensing another person's emotional or physiological state — may reflect this resonance mechanism. The experience is real (it has a neural substrate). Whether what is experienced corresponds to something transmitted from the other person, or to one's own nervous system's resonant response to observable cues, is a finer distinction than most energy work frameworks draw.

The Evidence Base for Specific Practices

Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has produced some of the most rigorous research on consciousness practices and their neural effects. His 2003 study in Psychosomatic Medicine, conducted with experienced meditators trained in the Tibetan tradition, found measurable differences in brain electrical activity between experienced meditators and novices, with meditators showing more activity in left prefrontal regions associated with positive emotional states and immune function. A 2004 study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found structural differences in the neural regions associated with attention in long-term meditators.

Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program has produced over 700 peer-reviewed publications documenting clinical efficacy for chronic pain, anxiety, depression, psoriasis, and cardiovascular conditions — the strongest evidence base of any consciousness practice in the literature.

For energy healing practices specifically: nursing research on Therapeutic Touch and Healing Touch shows consistent patient-reported calming effects and some clinical outcomes for pain and anxiety, though methodological limitations (difficulty blinding) complicate interpretation. Acupuncture has a moderate evidence base for pain management, with plausible neurobiological mechanisms (gate control theory of pain, endorphin release). Qigong and Tai Chi have emerging evidence for balance, cardiovascular health, and psychological wellbeing.

The Epistemically Honest Position

The history of medicine includes many practices that preceded their scientific explanation: aspirin's mechanism was not understood until decades after its clinical use was established. The absence of a fully validated scientific explanation for a practice that consistently produces specific, useful results is not evidence that the practice doesn't work. It is evidence that the explanation is incomplete.

Alison Wood Brooks at Harvard Business School published research in 2016 (Journal of Experimental Psychology: General) demonstrating that personally meaningful rituals — regardless of their specific content — reliably reduce anxiety and improve performance in demanding situations. The mechanism appears to involve perceived control and focused attention rather than anything specific to the ritual's content. A practice that produces a useful internal state is worth using even when the mechanism is partially understood.

The intellectually honest approach to energy work and consciousness practices: use what consistently produces useful results. Investigate the mechanism with curiosity rather than either belief or dismissal. Notice that the practices with the strongest evidence bases (meditation, mindfulness, somatic awareness) cluster around the same territory that contemplative traditions have developed for millennia — which is less mysterious, and more interesting, than coincidence.
