The Strange Possibility That Your Mind Is Not Separate from Experience
Embodied cognition theories challenge the assumption that the mind processes a world outside. Research proposes a different picture of mind, body, and environment.
The mainstream assumption in both ordinary life and most of cognitive science is that the mind is located inside the head. Experience happens in the brain; the world outside is the thing that the brain processes information about. The boundaries of the cognitive system are the boundaries of the skull.
Embodied cognition research, and the philosophical tradition of enactivism that developed alongside it, proposes a substantially different picture. In this alternative view, mind is not a thing inside a container processing a world outside. It is a process that arises in and through the active engagement of a living body with its environment. The boundary between mind and world is less clear and less important than the standard picture assumes.
The Embodied Mind
Francisco Varela, a Chilean biologist and neuroscientist, Evan Thompson, a philosopher, and Eleanor Rosch, a cognitive psychologist, published The Embodied Mind in 1991. The book drew together phenomenology (particularly the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty), cognitive science, and Buddhist philosophy to argue that cognition cannot be understood by studying the brain alone.

This means that what you perceive and understand is shaped not only by what your brain processes but by what kind of body you have, what sensorimotor history you carry, and what kind of environment you are embedded in.
Andy Clark and the Extended Mind
Andy Clark, a philosopher and cognitive scientist, and David Chalmers, a philosopher of mind, published "The Extended Mind" in 1998. Their argument extended embodied cognition beyond the body to the environment: cognitive processes may extend beyond the boundaries of the brain and body into external resources.

Damasio's Somatic Markers: Rationality That Depends on the Body

We understand argument in terms of war (we attack positions, defend claims, demolish arguments, score points). We understand time in terms of space (the future is ahead, the past is behind, events are coming). We understand abstract emotional states in terms of physical orientations (feeling up, being down, being weighed down by grief, being uplifted by joy).
Lakoff and Johnson argued that these are not merely linguistic conventions. Mind is not separate from the body's physical experience; it is built on and through it.

It is the ground from which inquiry begins.
If mind is genuinely embodied rather than purely computational, then approaches to psychological change that address the body directly are not merely adjuncts to cognitive or verbal therapy. They address the cognitive system where much of its actual processing occurs.
