Why Synchronicities Feel Meaningful

Carl Jung named the experience. Neuroscience and cognitive psychology have studied the mechanisms behind it. Here is what the research shows about why certain coincidences feel significant.

You think of someone you have not spoken to in months and your phone rings with their name on the screen. You are sitting with a question that has been occupying your mind for weeks and you open a book at random and find a passage that speaks directly to it. You notice the same unusual word, image, or number appearing repeatedly across unrelated contexts in a short span of time.

These experiences have a quality that is difficult to dismiss — not because they cannot be explained, but because the feeling they produce does not wait for an explanation. They feel significant. They feel like something is being communicated, or pointed at, or confirmed.

Carl Jung gave this class of experience a name. Cognitive science has studied the mechanisms behind it. Both perspectives illuminate something real, though they disagree about what exactly is real.

Jung's Concept and Its Limits

Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, introduced the concept of synchronicity in a 1952 publication he co-authored with physicist Wolfgang Pauli. Jung defined synchronicity as an acausal connecting principle — a class of connection between events based on meaning rather than causality.

Jung was not a naive mystic on this question. He was careful to distinguish synchronicity from superstition and to frame it as a scientific hypothesis about a category of connection that standard causal explanation did not cover. His clinical examples typically involved patients in psychologically significant moments whose inner states seemed to be reflected in external events in ways that could not have been causally produced.

His framework has significant problems. The concept of "acausal meaningful connection" is difficult to operationalize scientifically — how would you test for it? Jung did not offer a clear mechanism, and his reliance on quantum physics (through Pauli) as an analogy for non-local connections has not held up. The framework tends to be unfalsifiable: any coincidence can be interpreted as meaningful in retrospect, and the absence of synchronicities in a given period does not count against the theory.

What Jung identified correctly was the phenomenon itself — that certain coincidences reliably produce a specific quality of experience, a feeling of significance that feels different from ordinary coincidence. The question that research has addressed is what produces that experience.

Patternicity: The Evolutionary Account

Michael Shermer, who has written extensively on belief and skepticism, developed the concept of patternicity to describe the general human tendency to find meaningful patterns in random or unrelated data. His account is evolutionary.

The brain's pattern-detection system, Shermer argued, is calibrated by evolutionary pressures toward detecting patterns rather than missing them. A hominid who sees a pattern in the grass — a predator moving — and treats it as real will sometimes be wrong (the wind moved the grass) but will rarely be eaten. A hominid who fails to detect the pattern when a predator is actually there does not survive to pass on genes. The cost asymmetry means the system evolved to err toward false positives.

Applied to coincidence, this predicts exactly what people experience: the pattern-detecting system flags coincidences as potentially meaningful because flagging meaningful patterns is what it evolved to do, and it generates the associated feeling of significance. The feeling that a coincidence is meaningful is the output of a system that fires on anything that could be meaningful — including things that are not.

This does not mean that the feeling is wrong to attend to, or that meaningful coincidences never occur. It means that the feeling of meaningfulness is not itself evidence of meaningfulness. The brain produces that feeling reliably in response to coincidence, regardless of whether the coincidence reflects a deeper connection.

The Neuroscience of Pattern Detection

Peter Brugger at the University Hospital Zurich has conducted systematic research on individual differences in the tendency to perceive meaningful patterns and connections. His research found that this tendency — which he studied in connection with beliefs in paranormal phenomena, magical thinking, and coincidence significance — is associated with dopaminergic activity.

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in reward, prediction, and salience detection, appears to modulate the threshold for pattern detection. Higher dopamine activity is associated with a lower threshold — more patterns are detected, including spurious ones. Brugger found that people with stronger tendencies toward magical thinking and coincidence significance showed elevated dopaminergic activity. Administration of a dopamine precursor increased apophenic tendencies in healthy participants.

This provides a neurochemical account of why some people experience synchronicities more intensely than others, and why certain states — grief, stress, psychedelic experiences, elevated arousal — are associated with more intense experiences of meaningfulness in coincidence. These states affect dopaminergic and other neuromodulatory systems in ways that change the calibration of pattern detection.

The temporal lobe connection is also relevant. Research on temporal lobe epilepsy has long documented that seizure activity in this region produces intensely felt experiences of meaningfulness, significance, and revelation. The feeling that something is deeply meaningful — the quality that distinguishes synchronicity from ordinary coincidence — has a neurological substrate, and that substrate can be modulated independently of whether the content that triggers the feeling is actually meaningful.

Selective Attention and Confirmation

A mechanism that Shermer calls the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon and cognitive psychologists call the frequency illusion contributes substantially to the experience of synchronicities clustering or multiplying.

Once a theme, concern, word, or image enters conscious attention, the brain's attentional system becomes more alert to instances of it in the environment. This does not reflect an actual increase in the frequency of those instances — it reflects a change in the filtering of what reaches awareness. The number is appearing as often as it always did; you are noticing it now.

During psychologically significant periods — grief, transition, searching — attentional deployment changes. Themes relevant to the current concern become more salient. More things are flagged as potentially relevant. The result is that instances of meaning, coincidence, and apparent connection are noticed at higher rates than in neutral periods. The subjective experience is of more synchronicities occurring; the more parsimonious explanation is that more are being detected.

What the Experience Points Toward

The cognitive and neurological explanations of synchronicity do not settle the deeper question of whether any coincidences are genuinely meaningful in a way that transcends the brain's pattern-generating activity. That question runs into the hard problem of consciousness and the limits of what third-person neuroscience can say about first-person experience.

What the research does establish clearly is this: the experience of synchronicity is real as an experience. The feeling of significance is produced by identifiable mechanisms. Those mechanisms are calibrated toward detection rather than accuracy. And they are sensitive to psychological state — people in searching, grieving, or heightened states experience synchronicities more intensely.

This has a practical implication that is separate from the metaphysical question. The synchronicities that feel most significant during periods of transition or searching may be pointing not at external connections but at internal ones. The themes that keep appearing in what you notice may reflect what your attention is already organized around — what you are already looking for, what is already alive in your concerns.

The felt significance of a synchronicity may be information not about the external coincidence but about what it found in you when it arrived. That is worth attending to, regardless of what produced the coincidence.
