Why You Freeze Before Charging More (It Is in the Body, Not the Mind)

The somatic basis for pricing avoidance — and why cognitive reframing alone does not change the moment of charging what you are worth.

There is a moment that people who undercharge consistently describe. They have done the research. They know the market rate. They have decided on the number. They open the email or the proposal or the conversation, and something happens that is difficult to describe cognitively — a blankness, a pull, a sudden certainty that the number is wrong — and they write something lower.

This is not a thinking problem. It is a body event.

What the Freeze Actually Is

Stephen Porges, a neuroscientist at Indiana University who developed polyvagal theory, maps the autonomic nervous system as having three evolutionary layers. The most recently evolved is the ventral vagal system, which governs social engagement — the capacity to connect, to read safety in others' faces and voices, to be present in relationship. The older sympathetic system governs the fight-and-flight response. The oldest — the dorsal vagal system — governs the immobilization response: freeze, shutdown, collapse.

The dorsal vagal system activates when the nervous system encounters a threat it has determined is overwhelming and inescapable. The biological strategy is to shut down: reduce metabolic activity, disconnect from full conscious awareness, go still. In animal physiology, this is the death-feigning response. In humans, it produces a subjective experience of going blank, losing access to thinking, feeling constricted and unable to move forward.

The freeze before a pricing decision is a dorsal vagal event. The nervous system has encountered a situation it associates with an overwhelming consequence — the consequence that followed asking for more in the early environment in which asking was dangerous — and it has shut down the part of the person that was about to take the action.

Why Mindset Work Lands Too Late

Cognitive reframing operates in the prefrontal cortex. Affirmations, positive beliefs about worth, understanding that the pricing is justified — all of these live in the prefrontal cortex. The dorsal vagal system is phylogenetically older than the prefrontal cortex by hundreds of millions of years. It does not receive input from the prefrontal cortex in the same way the prefrontal cortex can receive and respond to conscious thought.

When the dorsal vagal system activates, it shuts down — among other things — the prefrontal cortex's capacity for complex reasoning. The freeze itself reduces access to the cognitive resources that affirmations and reframing rely on. By the time the person is in the freeze, the cognitive tools are less available.

This is why a person can believe, with genuine conviction, that they deserve to charge more — and still freeze in the moment. The belief is real. The freeze is also real. They live in different parts of the nervous system, and the older part wins in the moment of activation.

The Somatic Approach

Peter Levine at the Esalen Institute developed Somatic Experiencing as an approach to completing the biological action sequences that freeze interrupts. His research proposes that the freeze response is not a problem in itself — it is a protective response that, in the original context in which it developed, was adaptive. The problem is that the protective response activates in contexts where the original threat no longer exists.

Completing the interrupted sequence involves working directly with the physical sensations that accompany the freeze, rather than trying to override them cognitively. The approach is titrated — small doses of exposure to the activation, with regulation support, rather than flooding.

In a pricing context, the practice is specific:

Before the pricing moment, locate the physical sensation that accompanies your freeze. Be precise — not "tightness" in a general sense, but where exactly in the chest, at what depth, with what quality of sensation. Name it without judgment.

Take a breath that extends the exhale. The extended exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system and specifically supports ventral vagal tone — the physiological state that allows engagement rather than shutdown. The standard ratio is an inhale of four counts and an exhale of six to eight counts.

Hold the original number for one breath before sending or speaking it. The practice is not to feel comfortable in the moment — the freeze sensations may still be present. The practice is to take the action from a slightly more regulated state than the freeze itself provides.

That one breath, held that one additional moment, is a new experience for the nervous system. The model it has built — that asking for this amount will produce this consequence — updates through new experiences of asking and surviving, not through believing differently about asking.

The Compounding Effect

The freeze response was learned through repeated experience. It updates through repeated new experience. The practice of holding the breath and the number for one additional beat, done consistently across many pricing decisions, changes the nervous system's expectation of consequence. Not because the belief has changed. Because the experience has.

This is slow work. It requires consistent practice across enough actual pricing moments for the new experiences to accumulate. The alternative — trying to think past the freeze — is faster to attempt and consistently less effective. The freeze predates thinking. It responds to experience.
