The pause is built through repetition in lower-stakes contexts. Noticing the reflexive yes before it leaves the mouth. The adjusted opinion before it arrives. The need suppressed before it becomes a request. Each noticing is a pause. Each pause is practice.
What It Produces
The pause does not resolve the underlying pattern. It does not eliminate the pull. What it produces is the possibility of a different response. That possibility, accumulated across many moments and many contexts, is the substance of genuine change.
