Nervous system pattern

The self-system develops and expresses most fully in relational context. Identity is most coherent in the presence of a significant other — in relationship, the self knows who it is. In isolation, identity becomes uncertain and the system seeks connection to restore coherence.

Somatic signature

The body that is most alive and most regulated in harmonious partnership. Physical discomfort with conflict that has a specific quality — not fear of the conflict itself but fear of the relational dissolution the conflict seems to portend. The sense of the self as more solid and three-dimensional in relation.

Wound pattern

Early environments where the self's identity was shaped primarily by the needs, preferences, and emotional states of others. The adaptation: become extraordinary at reading and responding to others, at the cost of clear, stable access to the self's own preferences and identity.

Healing path

Developing the capacity for selfhood in the absence of a defining relational other. Learning to experience the self as coherent, complete, and interesting — alone.
