Anxious Attachment and Breakup
Breakup activates the full separation response, collapsing the nervous system through protest, then despair, in the sequence Bowlby described in acute grief.
The loss of an attachment figure triggers both sympathetic hyperarousal (protest phase) and dorsal vagal collapse (despair phase) in sequence or alternation. Van der Kolk (2014) describes this as the body's complete disorganization in response to relational loss.
The nervous system relives not only the current loss but all prior experiences of loss and abandonment that were never fully processed. The current breakup activates the full archive of relational loss.
Pursuing contact with the former partner as protest behavior. If protest fails, collapse into depression, loss of functioning, and rumination. The oscillation between protest and despair maps onto Bowlby's (1969) three-phase separation response.
Titrated grief — allowing feeling without acting from it. Clear no-contact structures to allow the attachment system to begin updating the internal working model (Fraley & Shaver, 1999).
Bowlby (1980) described acute grief as organized protest followed by despair and eventual reorganization. Fraley and Shaver (1999) documented that anxiously attached individuals show more intense and prolonged grief responses to relationship dissolution.
