Psychological theme

The securely attached nervous system has a coherent, flexible strategy for managing proximity and distance: it can seek and use support when needed, tolerate separation without excessive distress, and return to exploration and connection after reunion. Ainsworth (1978) identified secure attachment in infants whose caregivers were consistently sensitive and responsive. The adult with secure attachment does not lack vulnerability or relational difficulty, but has internal and relational resources sufficient to navigate both.

Nervous system signature

High and flexible vagal tone, with the cardiac vagal brake able to modulate heart rate rapidly in response to social signals. Porges (2011) describes the secure adult's ventral vagal complex as the default operating system: the baseline is social engagement and connection, with the sympathetic and dorsal vagal systems available as needed rather than chronically active. Mikulincer and Shaver (2007) documented that secure individuals show rapid recovery from attachment-system activation rather than chronic dysregulation.

Twelve relational situations

Each situation below traces how secure attachment shapes the nervous system response, where the pattern originated in early caregiving, how it shows up behaviorally, and what research-backed healing looks like.

Research notes

Ainsworth, Blehar, Waters, and Wall (1978) identified the secure (B) pattern through the Strange Situation, characterized by using the caregiver as a secure base, showing distress at separation, and being comforted at reunion. Main (1990) described the adult correlate as Autonomous on the Adult Attachment Interview: coherent, collaborative, and able to value attachment while maintaining perspective. Mikulincer and Shaver (2007) conducted the most extensive longitudinal research on secure adult attachment, documenting its effects across relationship quality, mental health, and prosocial behavior.
