Vishnu

The Preserver: Dharma, Coherence, and Holding the Thread of Yourself

Mantra: Om Namo Narayanaya

The archetype

Vishnu is the archetype of the person who maintains inner coherence under external pressure, the one who can be in the middle of chaos and still know who they are. Vishnu represents the Sattvic quality of stability without rigidity: the capacity to hold form while remaining fully responsive.

Nervous system mapping

Vishnu corresponds to the ventral vagal state, the nervous system's condition of social engagement and regulated presence. His energy is the baseline of the person whose nervous system can remain resourced even under conditions that would activate others. Vishnu is what polyvagal theory calls the regulated state: coherent, connected, and clear.

Core teaching

Dharma means holding the thread of yourself when everything around you is pulling toward reaction. The person whose nervous system loses its center under pressure is being asked by Vishnu to build more structural integrity, through the repeated practice of returning to what is true about them when the disruption passes.

The wound they address

Vishnu addresses the dysregulation wound, the nervous system that learned it must become whoever the environment required rather than maintaining a stable center. He speaks to the person whose sense of self is highly contextual, who loses themselves easily in others' emotions, roles, and expectations.

Somatic practice

Stand in tadasana, mountain pose, for five minutes with eyes open. Feel the steadiness of your own structure. Practice returning to this pose, physically and then mentally, throughout the day: the micro-practice of returning to your own center when circumstances pull you off it. Vishnu's practice is continuity rather than stillness.

Modern application

In the middle of a conflict, when someone else's emotional activation is pulling you into reactivity, ask what you actually know to be true. The person who can stay in Vishnu's energy remains a resource to others precisely because they have not abandoned themselves in service of the dynamic. Regulated presence is itself the gift.

Research connection

Stephen Porges's polyvagal theory identifies the ventral vagal complex as the biological foundation of social engagement and regulated presence. Vishnu's Sattvic stability is the phenomenological description of what high vagal tone feels like from the inside.
