Creativity and Trauma Share a Nervous System

The standard interventions for creative blocks are creative in nature: change the medium, try free-writing, work at a different time of day, find inspiration elsewhere. These sometimes work. But a significant proportion of creative blocks do not respond to creative intervention because their cause is not creative. They are nervous system states.

Teresa Amabile at Harvard Business School, whose research on creativity in organizational contexts is among the most rigorous in the field, documented the relationship between affect and creative output across large samples of knowledge workers. Positive affect and psychological safety consistently predicted creative productivity; anxiety, threat, and negative mood consistently suppressed it.
