Every significant decision the mind makes has already been made, or blocked, by the body. Somatic awareness is not supplementary to good decision-making; it is prior to it.
Antonio Damasio at the University of Southern California developed the somatic marker hypothesis over several decades of research with patients who had suffered damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. These patients were not cognitively impaired. They could reason. But they could not decide. In particular, they could not make personal and social decisions. What they had lost, Damasio argued, was the ability to use somatic signals as markers in decision-making.
The somatic marker hypothesis proposes that the body generates emotional responses to past outcomes, and that these responses are experienced as gut feelings, physical sensations, or intuitions. In normal decision-making, these markers are present before conscious deliberation and help narrow the option space. The person who has lost access to their somatic markers is left with pure deliberation, and pure deliberation without somatic guidance produces paralysis or randomness rather than wisdom.
A.D. Craig at the Barrow Neurological Institute contributed a related body of work on interoception: the brain's capacity to sense the internal state of the body. His research mapped the interoceptive pathways and their relationship to emotional experience, establishing that bodily states are actively represented in the brain and that this representation shapes mood, emotion, and decision-making. The body is not reporting to the brain; the two systems are in continuous bidirectional conversation.
Joseph LeDoux at NYU added an evolutionary dimension: the amygdala, which processes emotional and threat-related information, is positioned anatomically to receive sensory information and generate responses before that information has fully processed through cortical regions. The famous shortcut: the body is already responding before the thinking brain has fully assembled the picture.
The practical implication is that people who are disconnected from somatic experience are not more rational; they are operating with less data. Developing somatic awareness is not a spiritual luxury. It is information literacy applied to the most available data source: the body that is always present.
