What Is the Opening of the Loop?

The opening of the loop is what actually happens when the nervous system begins to revise the prediction the first room installed. It does not announce itself. It arrives in the retroactive recognition that the chair has changed its angle slightly, the coffee tastes more like coffee, the email got sent on Monday instead of Wednesday.

The Pattern

The opening of the loop is the name given in The Life That Is Already Yours to the gradual revision of the nervous system's prediction that the full self is too much for the room. The opening does not arrive as a clear transition from before to after. It arrives in the accumulated weight of counter-evidence against the original prediction: the email sent with the correct rate and the room not producing the cooling, the opinion expressed with its actual edges and the friendship holding it, the morning the coffee tasted more like coffee than coffee has tasted in a while. The opening is the prediction updating through experience, one prediction error at a time.

Origins & Context

The opening as a working concept synthesizes the neuroscience of use-dependent plasticity, Mary Main's research on earned security, Wolfram Schultz's identification of dopamine as a prediction error signal, James Prochaska's transtheoretical model of behavioral change, and the research on the technologies that most directly target the level at which the working model is stored — EMDR (Francine Shapiro), ACT (Steven Hayes), and Internal Family Systems (Richard Schwartz). The opening names the actual phenomenology of change rather than the dramatic version the self-help literature promises: not transcendence, recognition. Not liberation, the slight cumulative shift in how fully the actual life is being received.

The opening does not announce itself. It arrives in the retroactive recognition that something has shifted, that the chair you have been sitting in for years has changed its angle slightly.— Nikita Datar

How It Shows Up

The opening shows up as the body's response that arrives slightly less automatically than last week. As the email that gets sent on Monday instead of sitting in the drafts until Wednesday, with the number the loop's anxiety would have revised down still in it. As the food tasting more fully because the monitoring program is consuming slightly fewer of the attentional resources required to receive the stimulus. As the music landing in the chest rather than the intellectual registration of sound in the mind. As the morning light producing something in the body it has not reliably produced. The opening is reported in the only language the opening actually speaks: the slight, cumulative, entirely legible shift in how fully the actual life is being received.

Nikita's Note

I spent years waiting for the opening to feel the way the literature promised it would feel. It did not. What it felt like was nothing dramatic, on most days, alongside the occasional Tuesday morning when the coffee tasted more like coffee, when an email got sent that would have stayed in the drafts six months ago, when a friend said something true and I let the true thing be in the room with her rather than managing it away. None of these was the threshold. All of them together were. The opening is the threshold being crossed in fragments, none of them sufficient alone, all of them cumulative. The threshold can be crossed.
