What is the difference between fawn and freeze responses?
The fawn and freeze responses are both trauma-based survival strategies that activate when fight and flight are unavailable, but they operate differently. Freeze is immobilization: the nervous system shuts down, movement stops, and the person collapses into numbness or dissociation. Fawn is active appeasement: the person moves toward the threat and attempts to manage it by becoming maximally pleasing.
Pete Walker, who developed the concept of fawn as a fourth trauma response, distinguishes it clearly from freeze. Freeze is the dorsal vagal collapse described by Dr. Stephen Porges in Polyvagal Theory: the most ancient stress response, in which the nervous system immobilizes to reduce pain and conserve resources when the threat is overwhelming. The developmental context differs. Freeze most commonly develops in response to acute, overwhelming, inescapable threat: abuse, accidents, violence. Fawn most commonly develops in environments of chronic relational threat, where a caregiver's anger, unpredictability, or emotional volatility required constant appeasement over time. Both responses can develop in the same person, with freeze activating when fawn fails or when the threat is too acute for appeasement.
In adult life, fawn and freeze often appear in sequence: when fawning fails to manage a relational threat, or when exhaustion makes continued appeasement impossible, freeze may activate as a secondary response. The person who cannot sustain the performance of pleasantness collapses into shutdown. Both states require the same foundational healing: building nervous system safety and widening the window of tolerance.
