What is functional freeze?

Functional freeze is a state of physiological shutdown beneath a functional surface: the person is doing tasks, meeting obligations, and appearing to function, while internally experiencing the numbness, flatness, dissociation, and lack of genuine aliveness characteristic of the dorsal vagal freeze response. Dr. Peter Levine identified this as a form of freeze that does not present as obvious immobility.

Dr. Peter Levine, founder of Somatic Experiencing, describes functional freeze as one of the most common and most invisible trauma responses. Unlike the acute freeze that occurs in immediate threat (complete immobilization, inability to speak or move), functional freeze allows apparently normal functioning while the person is internally held in a kind of suspended animation: going through the motions without genuine presence or aliveness.

Functional freeze is often mistaken for introversion, low motivation, or depression. It shares features with depression, including low energy, reduced enjoyment, and difficulty with initiative, but its mechanism is different: it is an autonomic nervous system state rather than a mood disorder, driven by dorsal vagal activation rather than by neurotransmitter dysregulation. This distinction matters for treatment: approaches targeting neurotransmitter systems do not address the autonomic state that drives functional freeze.

Common presentations include: high productivity with complete absence of satisfaction (the work gets done but feels hollow); social functioning with absence of genuine connection (the person shows up but is not there); and the experience of watching one's own life from a slight remove, as if behind glass, going through the motions rather than inhabiting the experience. This dissociative quality is the hallmark of the dorsal vagal state operating beneath functional behavior.

Healing functional freeze requires the same approach as healing any dorsal vagal state: titrated activation, glimmer tracking, and building the nervous system's access to the ventral vagal state through co-regulation and somatic practices. The goal is not higher functioning (the person may already be highly functional) but genuine aliveness: the capacity to feel, engage, and be present rather than merely performing the behaviors of engagement.
