What is rumination and why is it so hard to stop?
Rumination is repetitive, self-focused negative thought about past events, current problems, or anticipated futures, distinct from productive problem-solving in that it recycles without producing resolution or action. It is hard to stop because it feels like thinking — engaging the rational mind in a way that seems purposeful — but is actually a symptom of the nervous system's incomplete processing of distress material, looping because the loop has not reached an endpoint.

Interventions that interrupt rumination must engage a different system than the one driving it. Purely cognitive approaches (telling oneself to stop thinking about it) typically fail because the content that is driving the loop is not primarily cognitive. More effective are approaches that shift the nervous system's state: physical movement that activates the somatic body, social connection that engages the ventral vagal system, mindfulness practices that redirect attention to present sensory experience, or therapeutic approaches that process the underlying unresolved material rather than the surface loop.
