Your Nervous System Has Moved into Shutdown

Your body went quiet because loud became too dangerous.

Shutdown is the nervous system's deepest protection. When activation becomes unbearable, the body goes still. Numbness, exhaustion, disconnection, and the inability to feel much of anything are not weakness — they are the body's final answer to a threat it could not escape. This state can change. But it requires gentle, consistent work — not force.

What this means

Shutdown is not depression, though they overlap. It is the dorsal vagal response — the oldest part of the autonomic nervous system protecting you through stillness.

Trying to push yourself out of shutdown with willpower typically deepens it. The body needs to feel safe before it will come back online.

Small, predictable moments of connection, movement, and warmth are the medicine at this stage. Not ambition. Gentleness.
