Day 1: The Key You Swallowed

From You Are the Love You Seek

There is a moment in every woman's life when she realizes she has been searching outside herself for something she was born holding. The realization is not loud. It does not announce itself. It comes as a small, quiet recognition in an ordinary afternoon, when you put down the phone, or the book, or the conversation, and feel the silence underneath all of it. The silence is not empty. The silence is where you are.

You have been told, in a thousand different forms, that love is something you receive. That you must earn it, attract it, deserve it, perform for it. You have been told that someone else holds the key to the part of you that feels unfinished. So you swallowed the key. You handed it to mothers who could not give it back. To fathers who did not know they were holding it. To partners who mistook it for their own. To friends, teachers, strangers, the soft voices in books and the loud voices online. You handed it over, again and again, and waited.

This book is not about waiting. This book is about retrieving.

Day one is not the day you become someone new. Day one is the day you notice that the someone you have been is still here. She did not leave. She got quiet because nobody was listening. The work of the next year is the work of listening. Of returning. Of taking back the key.

Today, the practice is small. Sit somewhere you will not be interrupted. Close your eyes if it helps, or keep them open if closing them feels like leaving. Place one hand on your chest. Notice the heartbeat under your palm. It has been beating the whole time. It did not need you to notice it to keep going. But notice it now.

That is the first act of love. Not the grand gesture. Not the announcement. The noticing. The willingness to be in the same room as yourself for one full minute.

You will do this again tomorrow. And the day after. And for three hundred and sixty-three more days. Not because the noticing will become a habit. Because the noticing is the becoming.

You are the love you seek. Today is the day you start believing it might be true.
