Rethinking Positive Thinking (2014)

What they contributed

Oettingen's research challenged the conventional wisdom that positive visualization of desired outcomes produces better results — finding instead that pure positive visualization can actually reduce motivation by producing premature satisfaction. She developed WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan) — a mental contrasting technique that combines positive visualization of the desired outcome with realistic examination of the obstacles, followed by implementation intentions. WOOP has been validated across hundreds of studies as a more effective approach to goal achievement than positive thinking alone.

Why it matters here

WOOP provides the research-based framework for understanding why manifestation practices work when they do and why they don't when they don't — specifically, that the obstacle-examination step is the mechanism that produces behavioral follow-through.
