Herman's foundational text named and systematized complex PTSD — the long-term psychological consequences of repeated, inescapable traumatic experience (as distinct from the single-event trauma model). She connected the complex trauma pattern explicitly to women's social experience, documenting that what clinical psychiatry had been diagnosing as individual disorders in women was frequently the predictable consequence of chronic traumatic exposure in domestic, relational, and social contexts. Complex PTSD entered the WHO's ICD-11 diagnostic system in 2018 — 26 years after Herman named it.
