How does nervous system state affect relationships?

Nervous system state shapes every dimension of relational experience: the capacity to accurately read others' social cues, the ability to tolerate closeness or manage conflict, the interpretation of a partner's behavior, and the emotional availability one can offer. Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory shows that relational capacity is fundamentally a function of which nervous system state is active.

Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory established that the ventral vagal state is not only the state of calm but the state of social engagement: the neurological condition in which humans can accurately read facial expressions, modulate voice prosody for connection, listen to the frequencies of human speech, and offer and receive care. Without ventral vagal access, these capacities degrade. A person in sympathetic hyperarousal reads neutral expressions as threatening; a person in dorsal vagal shutdown cannot access the social engagement system at all.

This means that the quality of a relationship is partly determined by the nervous system states its participants are able to access. A couple in which one or both partners have significant nervous system dysregulation will systematically misread each other's cues, interpret innocent behavior as threatening, and find that conflict escalates beyond the original issue because the nervous system's threat response is running in the background.

Co-regulation is the mechanism by which relationships can either help or harm nervous system function. In a secure relationship, each partner's regulated nervous system cues safety in the other, producing a mutually regulating environment. In a dysregulated relationship, each partner's activation triggers the other's, producing escalating cycles that are difficult to interrupt because both nervous systems are simultaneously in threat mode.

Dr. Sue Johnson at the Ottawa Couple and Family Institute, whose Emotionally Focused Therapy is grounded in attachment theory, describes the fundamental question in intimate relationships as a nervous system question: "Are you there for me? Are you safe?" When the answer is experienced as yes, the nervous system relaxes and genuine connection becomes possible. When the answer is experienced as uncertain or no, the attachment system activates and conflict escalates.
