What is nervous system dysregulation?

Nervous system dysregulation is when the autonomic nervous system becomes stuck outside its window of tolerance — chronically activated in fight-or-flight, chronically shut down in freeze, or swinging rapidly between the two — in response to stress, trauma, or accumulated overwhelm.

The autonomic nervous system regulates the body's threat response through two primary branches: the sympathetic (activating) and parasympathetic (calming). When these function well, the system moves flexibly between states — activating in response to challenge and returning to rest when safe. Dysregulation occurs when this flexibility is lost.

Dr. Stephen Porges, developer of Polyvagal Theory at the University of Indiana, identified three distinct nervous system states: ventral vagal (safe and social), sympathetic (mobilized — fight or flight), and dorsal vagal (immobilized — freeze or shutdown). Trauma disrupts the system's ability to return to the ventral state.

Symptoms of dysregulation include chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional flooding, difficulty feeling present, exhaustion without rest, digestive issues, and relationship difficulties. These are not character flaws — they are the nervous system doing what it learned to do to survive.

Healing requires rebuilding the system's flexibility through gradual exposure to regulated states: co-regulation with safe people, somatic practices, breath work, and building predictable safety over time. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, documented that trauma healing must include the body, not only the mind.
