What is the default mode network and why does it matter for healing?

The default mode network (DMN) is a set of interconnected brain regions that become active when the mind is not engaged in focused external tasks, during daydreaming, self-referential thought, rumination, and future imagining. It is central to healing because trauma, depression, and anxiety are all associated with hyperactivity and altered patterns within the DMN.

The default mode network was identified by Dr. Marcus Raichle at Washington University in St. Louis, who noticed in the late 1990s that certain brain regions showed greater activity at rest than during focused tasks. The network includes the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and hippocampus, and is sometimes called the "resting state" network because it activates most strongly when external task demands are low.

The DMN is associated with the narrative self: the internal storytelling that generates the sense of continuous identity across time, the capacity for empathy and perspective-taking, and the ability to imagine the future and recall the past. It is also associated with rumination, the repetitive, self-focused negative thought that characterizes depression and anxiety, and with the intrusive recollection patterns of PTSD.
