The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, running from the brainstem through the neck, heart, lungs, and abdominal organs. The vagus nerve is uniquely accessible among autonomic pathways because of the respiratory sinus arrhythmia: the normal acceleration of heart rate on inhalation and deceleration on exhalation that reflects vagal regulation of the heart. By deliberately slowing and extending exhalation, a person can directly stimulate vagal activity and shift the nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance. This makes breath the most immediately accessible tool for nervous system regulation, and explains why so many ancient traditions placed breath at the center of spiritual and healing practice.
Other vagal stimulation practices with research support include: humming and chanting (which stimulate the vagus through vocal resonance), cold water immersion (which triggers the dive reflex, a vagal response), gargling, singing, and social laughter. Dr. Dacher Keltner at UC Berkeley has researched the physiological effects of awe experiences, finding that they activate the vagus nerve and produce anti-inflammatory effects, suggesting that experiences of wonder and connection to something larger than oneself have genuine physiological healing properties.
