Siegel founded the field of interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), which examines how the mind, brain, and relationships form an integrated system. His research documented that the human brain is a social organ — its development, regulation, and moment-to-moment function occur in relationship to other nervous systems. He established that early relational experience shapes the brain's architecture through the same mechanisms (synaptic pruning, neural pathway strengthening) as all other experience — making relationships literally biological.

Why it matters here

Siegel's work explains why attachment patterns are not 'just mental' — they are encoded neurologically through early relational experience. His concept of implicit memory (relational patterns that operate below conscious narrative recall) explains why insight into attachment patterns does not automatically change them.
