Porges developed polyvagal theory, which maps the autonomic nervous system's three-tiered hierarchy: the ventral vagal (safety, social engagement), the sympathetic (mobilization, fight/flight), and the dorsal vagal (immobilization, freeze, shutdown). His work explains how the body's threat-detection system operates below conscious awareness and how safety — genuinely felt in the nervous system, not just cognitively assessed — is the prerequisite for healing, learning, and authentic relationship.
