Nervous System — The Body's Intelligence
Polyvagal theory and somatic healing
The nervous system is not a passenger in psychological healing. It is the location where every wound is stored and where every change must ultimately register. The polyvagal theory gives practitioners a precise vocabulary for the three-state hierarchy of autonomic regulation — ventral vagal (connection and safety), sympathetic (mobilization and defense), and dorsal vagal (shutdown and dissociation).
The wound pattern
Every psychological wound has a somatic signature. The worth wound lives in the collapsing chest. The abandonment wound lives in the scanning eyes. The fawn response lives in the body that moves toward a threat before the mind has decided to.
The healing path
Somatic healing means working at the level of the body's automatic responses — not through willpower or understanding, but through direct intervention in the physiological patterns themselves. Breath, movement, co-regulation, and specific somatic techniques are the tools.
